Kiva – A New Way to Help the Poor

with one comment

I found a site that actually helps raise small amounts of money for budding entrepreneurs in the Philippines (and around the world). The mission of is  to connect people through lending for the sake of alleviating poverty. It is the world’s first person-to-person micro-lending website, empowering individuals to lend directly to unique entrepreneurs around the globe. The people you see on Kiva‘s site are real individuals in need of funding – not marketing material. Kiva partners with existing expert microfinance institutions. Kiva provides a data-rich, transparent lending platform. An example (click here) is Estrella Labrada who buys old, non-functioning pump-boat engines, repair these and sell them to the fishermen. Her loan request was $250 and Kiva was able to raise that amount nine individuals from the U.S., Canada and Dominican Republic.
