Globe, Facebook Partner to Support Developers, Startups

leave a comment »

Digital lifestyle leader Globe Telecom and social media behemoth Facebook are teaming up to support developers and startups in the Philippines through Internet.org, an initiative which is incidentally run by Facebook to provide internet connectivity to two-thirds of the world which is not yet connected.

To drive the partnership, Kickstart Ventures Inc. is hosting an event called “Raid The Fridge,” an everyone-is-an-equal startup community event with an atmosphere that builds bridges across startups and corporates, founders and investors, developers and business. Kickstart Ventures is a wholly-owned venture capital subsidiary of Globe. For the 8:00PM speaker’s slot, Globe is bringing in Jackie Chang, Product Partnerships Manager for Internet.org at Facebook, who will be talking about the Internet.org initiative and how it can impact local startups and developers for a much-needed global exposure.

Globe Senior Advisor for Consumer Business Group Daniel Horan says, “Globe continues to share with Facebook a common pursuit of broadening the digital lifestyle to make it more mainstream. By opening Internet.org to developers and entrepreneurs, we see more opportunities for the local digital startup community to expand their reach, propagate social advocacies, and push entrepreneurial pursuits at the grassroots level.” Last May, Facebook announced the Internet.org platform aimed at supporting local developer communities.

Attendees to Raid The Fridge will have a chance to learn more about developing relevant content and services for Internet.org, happening on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at 8:00pm at the Kickstart office in Makati City, Philippines.

Highest Ranking Filipino-American Naval Officer in the U.S.

leave a comment »

Very soon, the Vice Admiral of the United States Navy may soon be (officially) be given to the granddaughter of a WWII Filipino veteran and a Filipino-American herself, besides also holding a simultaneous title as Defense Health Agency director.

Rear Adm. Raquel C. Bono today is currently a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy who was commissioned in 1979. She got her degree from the University of Texas at Austin and began her medical education at Texas Tech University and completed a surgical internship and residency at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, and a Trauma and Critical Care fellowship at the Eastern Virginia Graduate School of Medicine in Norfolk.

In 1990, she saw action during the first gulf war. Landing back stateside after two years, she began her rounds as general surgeon, surgical intensivist, attending surgeon, command intern coordinator, division head of Trauma, and various other titles at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. In 1999, she was assigned to the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. She returned back to Portsmouth four years later as director for Medical–Surgical Services. Then, for two years, she became executive assistant to the 35th Navy Surgeon General and Chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, followed by being the commanding officer Naval Hospital Jacksonville, Florida, for three years.

U.S. President Barack Obama nominated Bono for promotion. If this pushes through, she will be the highest ranking Filipino-American naval officer in the U.S.

GrabCar Promo Code as of September 14, 2015

with one comment

Somehow, many of my friends were sad when all the GrabCar promo codes disappeared despite the 30 percent reduction in cost. Compare a GrabTaxi from BGC/Burgos Circle to Glorietta which costs around P85 plus booking fee (if you use the CHICKEN or EGG GrabTaxi promo code, you’ll end up with only P10 booking fee instead of the P40). For a GrabCar with no promo code, it only costs P73. So, it’s still 23 percent cheaper than a GrabTaxi.

Anyways, here’s their latest GrabCar promo code I saw from their Instagram post just two hours ago. It starts today and ends after Friday, September 18, 2015. One-time use only for P100 off your GrabCar fare. Promo code = ILOVEMEGMAG.

Start GrabCar-ing now!
