Short Documentary Exposes How Employment Agencies Rip Off OFWs in Hong Kong

leave a comment »

Filipino migrant domestic workers are charged illegal fees by unscrupulous employment agencies in both the Philippines and Hong Kong. The practice is widespread and government systems to prevent such illegal activities are not fit for purpose. As a result, many migrant domestic workers have little choice but to pay these exorbitant fees and are heavily indebted, making it difficult to leave exploitative and abusive employers.

Watch the 20-minute YouTube video below.

“Between a Rock and a Hard Place,” a short documentary film by the Progressive Labor Union of Domestic Workers – Hong Kong (PLUDW-HK) and Hong Kong Federation of Asian Domestic Workers Union (FADWU), documents the illegal activities of employment agencies in Hong Kong, and the failure of the government to protect the rights of Filipino migrant domestic workers.

leave a comment »

Migrant worker Renato Tolog from the Philippines was left with a $24,000 medical bill after he fell ill while on a one year working visa. Tolog,55, is a carpenter from central Philippines who arrived in Christchurch on a one year work visa in March. His plan was to work hard in Christchurch to support his wife, three children and two grandchildren back home.

In September he became ill, was diagnosed with appendicitis and had his appendix removed at Christchurch Hospital. Following the surgery he was discharged with a bill for $14,619.72. Two weeks later he developed an infection and was hospitalized for treatment with IV antibiotics. He went home with another bill, this time for $9497.

Migrant workers are not eligible for publicly funded healthcare unless they have a minimum two-year work visa.

The Music Run™ by PhilAm Vitality is the Ultimate Music-themed 5k Fun Run

leave a comment »

How can you mix running and music together? Simple! Bring your portable music device during your run. Apple started the trend with the iPod Mini. But what about an entire music fest of rock, pop, old school, hip hop, and dance, intertwined as part of the run’s staged music performances during the entire running event?

Let us introduce you to The Music Run™ by PhilAm Vitality, an entire new breed of fun runs that combines music with the fitness craze of running plus a music festival. Obviously, The Music Run’s major partner here is PhilAm Life, with its PhilAm Vitality, a unique science-backed wellness program that rewards members when they take steps to be healthy. With close to 20 years of success spanning several continents, the PhilAm Vitality is now available for Filipinos who would like to go beyond traditional insurance products.

The Music Run™ by PhilAm Vitality happens on December 3, 2016 at McKinley West in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

But going back to The Music Run by PhilAm Vitality, how does it work?

First, go to www.themusicrun.com/events/manila to register. By November 1, 2016, registration fees are as follows:

  • Standard Pack = ₱950
  • Rock Star Pack = ₱1,600

The Music Run by PhilAm Vitality Standard Pack comes with a T-shirt, bag, beat band, sticker, and temporary tattoo. The Rock Star Pack comes with everything the Standard Pack gets plus a towel, water bottle, and cap.

Last call for registrations start on November 21st and the Standard and Rock Star packs will cost ₱1,050 and ₱1,800, respectively.

You can collect your event packs at Glorietta 5 in Makati from November 26th to the 28th. You need to bring or show the confirmation e-mail and a government-issued ID.

Next, start “Voting” for your favorite soundtracks. Here’s the thing: the entire 5k run will be divided into five interactive and themed music zones – rock, pop, old school, hip hop, and dance. The distances between zones is 1k. Hence, the 5k run. All these zones are lined up with over 120 speakers pumping out the songs you voted. Yes, Victoria, you don’t need an iPod.

Use the live Spotify Music Voting App on www.themusicrun.com.ph. You can (actually, you should) also ask the help of your friends to vote the playlist you’d like in each music zone. The more votes your playlist gets, the high the chance it makes it to official playlists of each music zone.

Listen. Vote. Share.

And during the 5k run, you will now be called a Music Runner™.

At the end of the 5k run is the music festival featuring Australian radio house DJ Sam Withers.

Run. Dance. Party.

Official hashtags: #livethebeat #TMRbyPhilam

With every step of the way, running will never sound so good. I mean, there’s a pre-run concert performance by Sud, a local alternative band. When the 5k fun run starts, you have awesome playlists blasting out of more than 120 speakers in five genres or music zones. At the end of the 5k run, the fun doesn’t stop as a dance music fest by a renowned DJ mixes it up.

Kats Cajucom, Deputy Head of Philam Vitality: “This is the second time that The Music Run has agreed to partner with Philam Life. We want to send a strong message that being healthy can also be fun and engaging. One of our company’s main thrusts is healthy living through our Philam Vitality program, which is the first of its kind in the Philippines. It is a full-scale wellness program where members get rewarded for making healthy choices. Through Philam Vitality, we are taking active steps to positively transform the lives of Filipinos by helping them live longer, healthier, and better lives.”

Martin Capstick, Co-founder and CEO of Exceed Sports and Entertainment (the organizer): “While most fun runs originate from the US, The Music Run™ started in Asia and expanded throughout the region before crossing over to Europe and the US in the last two years. The reason for its massive success is its winning formula that combines music with the ever-growing fitness craze into the ultimate running and music festival that also puts control of the run’s soundtrack in the hands of our Music Runners™.”

The Music Run™ first took place in Kuala Lumpur in 2014. Since then, it has drawn more than 100,000 runners across 12 events and nine countries.

Don’t forget – The Music Run™ by Philam Vitality happens on December 3, 2016, at McKinley West, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City. Gates open at 2:30PM.

For more information on The Music Run™ by Philam Vitality, visit the official website, Facebook page, and YouTube Channel.

Use Your GCash MasterCard This Week and Win a Huawei Watch

leave a comment »

Let’s talk about GCash MasterCard and the Huawei Watch. Last week, we wrote about “Pay Your Bills With GCash and Win a 2016 Nissan Juke Plus More”, with last week’s prize being a Bose SoundLink Speaker. The 2016 Nissan Juke sedan is actually the grand prize, to be raffled off on the 12th week of Christmas.

This week October 28, 2016 up to November 3, 2016, the GCash MasterCard raffle prize will be a Huawei Watch, which retails to $350 or roughly ₱17,000.

All you have to do is use your GCash MasterCard for your in-store and online purchases, like groceries, clothes, devices, books, and so on. For every transaction, you get one (1) raffle entry. The more transactions you make using your GCash Mastercard, the more raffle entries you get, and the higher the chance you get of winning the Huawei Watch.

How To Get a GCash MasterCard for Free

If you do not (yet) (still) have a GCash MasterCard, why? No, just kidding. If you want to get one so you may win any of Week 5-12 prizes, simply go to the “Pay Your Bills With GCash and Win a 2016 Nissan Juke Plus More” link (or copy-paste) http://wp.me/pwNZn-C3.
