Farewell Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach

leave a comment »

Actually, I’m going to miss seeing our very own Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach in the official Instagram, Twitter and Facebook pages of Miss Universe. I think she was one of the most down-to-earth, fun-to-be-with type of beauty queen the Miss Universe franchise ever had; or maybe I’m just biased.

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach is obviously of Filipino-German descent who was and still is an actress, TV host and model. She was born in Stuttgart, Germany to a German father and Filipino mother, but grew up in Cagayan de Oro. Since age four, she’s already been in the entertainment industry – acting, singing and dancing – through ABS-CBN Corporation’s talent agency, Star Magic.

The best thing you can know of our Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach is that she joined the Philippine’s version, Binibining Pilipinas Pageant, three consecutive times before winning the Binibining Pilipinas Universe title. The rest is history, especially when Miss Universe 2015 host Steve Harvey misread the results and mistakenly announced the winner as Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez.

And this is probably the best video I’ve seen Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach do so far – quirky, fun, and just being herself.

Wil Dasovich and Japeth Aguilar Kicks-off Gillette Mach3 10 vs. 1 Battle

leave a comment »

I was invited to the official launch of the 10 vs. 1 Battles of the most popular razor blades since time-a-memorial – meaning since I started shaving. It used to be we’d buy Gillette blades, pesky little stuff that sometimes results in cuts, and insert that in heavy-metal shavers. Then, Gillette came out with the disposable and life never became the same.

Wil Dasovich is a funny guy on YouTube, using the moniker “Tsong and Tsonggo”, which started on November 2014. Today, his YouTube channel boasts more than 230,000 subscribers and 30 million views. Wow! Talk about just two years! And his sister’s cute, too (adorable Haley Dasovich). Aww! How can you resist a cutie?

Anyway… also appearing last November 6th at the 10 vs. 1 Battle was Filipino professional basketball player of Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Japeth Aguilar, all 6-foot, 9-inches tall – Yikes! Together, Wil Dasovich and Japeth Aguilar kicked off the Gillette Mach3 launch of the 10 vs. 1 Battle where the point being driven was: it takes 10 good shaves before 1 Gillette Mach3 gives out.

Unboxing the Gillette Mach3

I shave every other day because I have a tendency of getting razor burn if I did it every day. It was funny that during the event, some of the people I talked to didn’t really know how to shave properly. Ever heard the phrase “shaving against the grain?” Also known as “shaving against the direction of hair growth.” Yep! Most people do not know that doing so is the fastest way to get razor burn, damaged hair follicles and ingrown hairs. So, now you know!

There was a video that was shown to everyone in the activity area where Wil Dasovich was shaving – always downwards; meaning, shaving with the grain, so to speak. Then, I heard someone beside me say in Filipino, “Why doesn’t he shave upwards like I do? Or like how they do it in the barber shop?” Buzz! Do that every day and the chance of your chin and neck swelling like a ripe tomato will come to bear fruit! Get it? Bear fruit?

I also “try” to shave without water and shaving cream. For many of the non-Gillette brands, I have to use either. With the double-bladed Gillettes, I sometimes don’t, but only sometimes. With Gillette Mach3, I tried shaving without water or shaving cream. The first time I did so – WOW! It was a smooth ride, or a smooth feeling. I did not experience any single hair being pulled out (“Ouch!”), which usually happens when you use one blade or most of the generic two-bladed disposable shavers. But the Gillette Mach3? None whatsoever. The best test of a good shaver is a dry shave, and you should get the feel of its smoothness, not a rough sensation.

I was given a kit with the shaver plus three more detachable blades which, by doing the math, would provide me a great shave for the next three months or exactly 80 days. With other disposable shavers, I already feel the roughness by the third or fourth shave. The Gillette Mach3 kit given to me also came with a shaving cream but I don’t even know if I’m ever going to use that, what with the smooth shaving feeling I get with the Mach3 on a dry shave.

This is not a paid endorsement. Fine, considering I was given the Gillette Mach3 set for free, I think of it like an “unboxing” activity when tech bloggers are given gadgets to test. I can’t imagine giving back my Gillette Mach3 kit after I use it. Super LOL! So, trust me when I say you’ll save more buying this dang Gillette Mach3 kit than getting that rough feeling with your cheap, disposable, double-bladed shaver, and buying too much, too often. Egad! Don’t even think of getting a single-blade; and please tell your barber to stop shaving “against the grain,” now that you know (or else, “I told you so!”)

So Wil Dasovich and Japeth Aguilar does it right, shows it right, and makes it right by partnering with Gillette Mach3. So far, nothing does a better, smoother shave than it. It being the Gillette Mach3.

Oh, and Joyce Pring was the host of the Gillette Mach3 10 vs. 1 Battle at Eastwood City Mall that November 6th afternoon. I also just had to mention her. Another LOL!

‘Nuff said.

D5 Studio Hits 2.7 Million Views with Jasmine Curtis-Smith in Forever Sucks

leave a comment »

Did you know that Forever Sucks is a comedy-drama soap opera show not being shown on traditional air- or cable-TV but exclusively through the web through D5 Studio?

TV5 today presented to the Philippine online and offline media its new creation called D5 Studio, which was originally launched labeled as Digital 5 and was once just a digital support team of MediaQuest. The media briefing was held at the new Shangri-La at The Fort Hotel in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.

TV5, formerly known as ABC 5, is a Filipino commercial television network solely owned by MediaQuest Holdings, Inc. which in turn is a wholly owned subsidiary of the beneficial trust fund of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company headed by business tycoon Manuel V. Pangilinan,

Above: Forever Sucks stars Jasmine Curtis-Smith, JC Santos, Gio Gahol, Gab Pangilinan and Sari Estrada. Directed by Joel Ferrer.

Headlining D5 Studio’s cadre of digital content is Forever Sucks, a story of Izabel, a 170-yr old vampire pretending to be a normal 21-yr old that after 10 decades of swearing off men, she meets a human who may finally change her life forever. Forever Sucks stars Jasmine Curtis-Smith is already in its 10th episode. Each episode of Forever Sucks runs about 10 minutes or so, and can be watched through the Internet using your desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone. As of today, Forever Sucks boasts 2.7 million views and already has a large following akin to traditional on-the-air and cable TV shows.

D5 Studio produces digital content through three platforms: D5 Studio Originals, GG Network and uLOLS. Much like HBO Originals, D5 Studio Originals showcases unconventional show themes and formats, leading it off with Forever Sucks. GG Network creates gaming and eSports content and events which intends to bring the country’s top game streamers, local publishers and international game distributors. D5 Studio uses Hopscotch mobile platform, and Sports5 mobile portal is powered by Hopscotch. Finally, uLOLS bring humor to the D5 Studio entertainment content through shareable original content on Filipino culture and trends

The creators of D5 Studio and their talent.

D5 Studio creates digital content for Millennials because every marketplace expert knows, Millennials are forever glued to their personal digital devices than sitting down in the family sala watching television altogether.

Viva Manileña blogger Edel Santiago won an Apple Macbook Air because she fielded the best question during the media briefing.

As a ROAR TMCI managing director, I know for a fact that Facebook alone in the Philippines is viewed using a tablet or smartphone 90 percent of the time, leaving 10 percent to be shared using desktops and laptops. That single, glaring statistic tells you how you must envision delivering entertainment, gaming and sports content – not through traditional means but by way of the web. When radio and television once ruled and managed your time, today Millennials want to rule their time through on-demand and portable content.

Forever Sucks celebrity star Jasmine Curtis-Smith is interviewed by the media.

D5 Studio is clearly leading the way ahead of the other major networks to provide a multi-platform, multi-discipline and multi-channel network for the Millennial.

AlDub to Host Biggest Event Ever This Saturday

leave a comment »

A few days ago, Kalyeserye of Eat Bulaga noontime show announced a special show of AlDub at the Philippine Arena. Labeled as “AlDub – Sa Tamang Panahon,” it is no rival to competing “It’s Showtime” which only booked the 16,500-seat Smart Araneta Coliseum for the latter’s anniversary show last month. By yesterday, social media netizens has been swarming with pleas of getting tickets above regular ticket prices, a sign that the AlDub show is about to have a sold out event.

AlDub at the 55,000-seating Philippine Arena event is expected to overtake Katy Perry’s Prismatic World Tour concert which sold more than 30,000 tickets a few months ago. In fact, many are expecting it will also exceed the 43,000-plus attendance of the premier film showing of the biography of Felix Manalo, Iglesia Ni Cristo’s (INC) founder. The Philippine Arena is owned by INC.

AlDub is the love team that stars in variety show Eat Bulaga’s Kalyeserye edition. The AlDub label pertains to two people – Alden Richards and Yaya Dub (real name Maine Mendoza, who is the Dubsmash queen of the Philippines and an actress by her own right). The parody started in the noontime show’s segment “Juan for All, All for Juan,” together with three other male actors portraying grandmothers – Wally Bayola as Lola Nidora, Paolo Ballesteros as Lola Tidora, and Jose Manalo as Lola Tinidora.

The milestone of the AlDub phenomenon of the Kalyeserye soap opera garnered a whooping 25.6 million tweets in one day for the hashtag #AlDubEBforLove, one over the 12.1 million tweets in a day for the hashtag #ALDUBMostAwaitedDate.

Ticket prices for the “AlDub – Sa Tamang Panahon” show are P1,200, P600, P300 and P150. However, we believe it’s already sold out as of yesterday.

Movie Ex With Benefits Sparks Outrage

leave a comment »

I was scroll-reading through my Twitter List “PHnews” where most of the Philippine based Twitter accounts that tweet news and information are listed when I chanced upon the InterAksyon feed entitled, “Medreps offended by trailer of ‘Ex with Benefits’, call for film’s boycott” and a Twitter pic showing Derek Ramsey and Coleen Garcia about to make it out. So, I clicked the link.

In short, a medical representative or Med Rep who is now based abroad “posted an open letter to the Movie and Television Review Classification Board (MTRCB) to review both the trailer and the film,” as reported by InterAksyon from its source, The Fanboy SEO.

“Pinapangit po nila ang image ng mga Professional Medical Representative at ang professional relationship namin sa doctors. Pangalawa po, wala po sa duty namin ang humiga sa kama para humingi ng benta. Kami po ay nagundergo ng 2months intensive training para pumasa sa pagiging Medrep sa Pilipinas. Ngayon po kahit ako ay wala na sa Pilipinas, nababalitaan ko po na may PRC exams na mga Medrep para pumasa,” Quisumbing posted last Saturday and Interaksyon reported.

A group of medical representatives based in Baguio City called BRAD (Baguio Responsible Association of Detailmen) wrote the film’s director, Gino M. Santos, and asked for his side on the issue before they make their next move to file a complaint with the City Government of Baguio and request for the banning of the film in Baguio Cinemas – also from InterAksyon.

Watch the movie trailer and decide for yourself.

Nationwide screening of the movie is scheduled starting September 2, 2015. It is produced by Star Cinema and Viva Films.

Bituing Walang Ningning The Musical Will Open Again on October 2015

leave a comment »

For some of you readers who are familiar with the title, it’s a comic book series, a television series and a movie, right? Remember the infamous slapping phrase, “You’re nothing but a second rate, trying hard copycat!” *SLAP!* Now, who do you remember saying that?

I was privileged to have watched the musical finale of the Bituing Walang Ningning: The Musical at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila last July 18, 2015. So, yes, this article was due two weeks or so ago. The musical has been running 24 shows before I watched its finale.

And for those who were not able to watch it, have no fear. Bituing Walang Ningning will have its second run starting October 8, 2015 also in Resorts World Manila. Yay!

I should say an awesome overall performance goes to Cris Villonco who played Lavinia Arguelles a.k.a. the Evil Queen of the show. Somehow, most villains in musicals do get the best roles that allows them to express themselves in all spheres of the musical experience. For me, it was Villonco who stole the show. I was also impressed with the singing prowess of Mark Bautista who played “lover boy” Nico Escobar and the acting of Monica Cuenco as musical play’s heroine Dorina Pineda. I knew Menchu Lauchengco was going to be there but she played a secondary role as Edith (okay, I forgot who Edith was). Of course, Jon Santos a gay role as Auntie stole some highlights because I knew he was ad-libbing some of his words – and it was awesome how he did it. Stage production was elegant yet simple (in short, not messy as I’ve seen some musicals do). Kudos to the scriptwriter and musical director, Freddie Santos, for doing a good job with the sometimes split-second intervals and ins-and-outs movements that usually create chaos in a musical play but was never felt by the audience (me!)

Bituing Walang Ningning is a Snow White versus the Evil Queen fairy tale done in a Philippine musical theater scene. But the ending, if you still recall the comic book, movie or TV series, is different. Well, that’s for you to find out when you watch it starting October 8, 2015 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater.

This comic book adaptation actually started as a 1985 movie blockbuster in Philippine cinema that starred Sharon Cuneta as Dorina, Christopher de Leon as Nico, and Cherie Gil as Lavinia. Also, the late Jay Ilagan, Tommy Abuel, Joel Torre and Chandra Romero were also cast in the silver screen version. The first screening day of this movie was actually Valentine’s Day of 1985. Zsa Zsa Padilla was originally offered the role of Lavinia but because of the two-piece swimsuit and some kissing scenes, Padilla turned it down.

Then came the television series version in 2006 with Sarah Geronimo playing Dorina and Angelika dela Cruz as Lavinia. This time, Zsa Zsa Padilla joined the cast of the TV series as Dorina’s real mother. It was aired on a primetime television hour in ABS-CBN.

The comic book version of Bituing Walang Ningning actually came out in 1984 and was created by Nerissa Cabral, a very well-known illustrator in the 80s and up till today. Her first illustrated story was published in 1962 in Espesyal Komiks. Thirty of her comic book stories have already seen themselves in film versions, starting with Ako ng Aking Ama and Karugtong ng Kahapon in 1975. During that one year in 1985, four of her works appeared on screen, including Bituing Walang Ningning.

The title song “Bituing Walang Ningning” was originally composed by Willy Cruz. In fact, nine out of the 13 songs in the musical were composed by Cruz. Paikot-ikot was by Mon Espia and Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy by Marvic Sotto. All of the 13 songs were originally published by Viva Music Publishing.

I earnestly recommend you watch Bituing Walang Ningning, The Musical starting on October 8, 2015 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater in Resorts World Manila. Tickets are not yet available (I think) but if they are, you can go online to Resorts World Manila or TicketNet Online to buy your tickets for the Philippine musical’s October run.

Robert de Niro and his business partners formally opened Asia’s first Nobu Hotel in Manila on Monday as the luxury brand gears up for global expansion.

The 321-room hotel within the bayside casino and entertainment City of Dreams complex opened to the beat of traditional drums and a shower of gold and silver confetti.

De Niro and his Nobu Hospitality partners, renowned chef Nobu Matsuhisa and Hollywood producer Meir Teper, led the ribbon cutting with Australian billionaire James Packer and Macau tycoon Lawrence Ho, co-chairmen of complex operator Melco Crown Entertainment.

The Oscar-winning actor said he is not only lending his name to the project but is personally involved in it.
