Migrant worker Renato Tolog from the Philippines was left with a $24,000 medical bill after he fell ill while on a one year working visa. Tolog,55, is a carpenter from central Philippines who arrived in Christchurch on a one year work visa in March. His plan was to work hard in Christchurch to support his wife, three children and two grandchildren back home.

In September he became ill, was diagnosed with appendicitis and had his appendix removed at Christchurch Hospital. Following the surgery he was discharged with a bill for $14,619.72. Two weeks later he developed an infection and was hospitalized for treatment with IV antibiotics. He went home with another bill, this time for $9497.

Migrant workers are not eligible for publicly funded healthcare unless they have a minimum two-year work visa.
