Free Public WiFi Hotspots in Metro Manila Activated

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) will begin the pilot testing of its P1.4 billion “Free WiFi in Public Places” project this July 2015. Originally planned to be a limited service up to 256 kbps speeds, this limit will now be removed allowing speeds that cater to streaming video sites like YouTube.

The six areas that will commence the pilot test are:

  • Rizal Park, Manila
  • Quezon City Hall, Quezon City
  • Quezon Memorial Circle, Quezon City
  • Philippine Coconut Authority (Philcoa), Quezon City
  • Land Transportation Office (LTO) office, East Avenue, Quezon City
  • Social Security System (SSS) office, East Avenue, Quezon City

The next free WiFi hotspots planned for activation will be in the area of Pasig City and Mandaluyong City.

P1.1 Billion for Trust Fund of OFW and Dependents Hospitalization

To cover the hospitalization of ailing overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents, Pasig City Rep. Roman Romulo has proposed to set aside some P1.1 billion, to be allocated out of a state-managed trust fund. A similar bill was earlier filed in both houses of the last Congress, but never saw the light of day. The bill is seeking to require every public hospital to establish a separate and exclusive ward for OFWs and their dependents that need medical care. It also mandates all government hospitals to increase their existing bed capacity by five percent, or by five beds for every 100 beds.

Sitel Reaches 2,000 Seat Capacity

Sitel, one of the leading global business process outsourcing provider of customer care and complimentary back-office processes in the Philippines, has recently reached its 2,000 seat target of its call center office at the One Julia Vargas Building in Pasig City. Sitel has six centers in the country with four in Metropolitan Manila and two in Baguio City.
