Dive and Run on 100 Years of Guam’s History
Here’s a little bit of history about Guam, popular with divers ’round the world but not too much with plain tourists like us.
Twenty-six years ago, the German cruiser SMS Cormoran II was scuttled in Guam’s Apra harbor That was April 7th of 1917, during World War I. Then, on August 27, 1943, the era of World War II, the Japanese freighter Tokai Maru was torpedoed and sunk right over the wreck of the Cormoran, laying 120 feet below sea level. In July 1974, the SMS Cormoran II was listed on the Guam Register of Historic Places, as well as the National Register of Historic Places a year later.
This makes Guam having the only dive site in the world with wrecks from two world wars. So, in honor of this piece of history and the lives that perished on the SMS Cormoran II, the Guam Visitors Bureau (GVB) will commemorate the 100th anniversary by holding memorial services on April 7, 2017, with wreath-laying activities at Apra Harbor and the Naval Cemetery in Hagatna, and a series of lectures and an exhibit during the weeklong celebration.
Guam’s annual premier running event, the United Airlines Guam Marathon, will also happen on the same day, the fifth year running, together with the Hafa Adai Expo and Pick up event.
The 5th United Airlines Guam Marathon (or more known as “UGM”) happens on April 9th from 3:00AM until 11:00AM. The participant or runner packet pick up location will be at the Hafa Adai Expo which opens on April 7th from 12:00PM until 6:00PM, and will continue to be open to the public the following day, April 8th from 9:00AM until 6:00PM. There will also be a running clinic by Naoko Takahashi, 2000 Sydney Olympics gold medalist and UGH ambassador, lots of booths, live entertainment, cultural activities, food concessions, official UGM and running merchandise shops, and other #OnlyOnGuam activities. Of course, there will also be shopping incentives and discounts to be given to all registered runners, visitors and local residents.
Culminating all these activities is a BBQ Beach Party at the Governor Joseph F. Flores Memorial Park, located at Ypao Beach overlooking Tumon Bay, with live concert performances, beach games, the traditional Tumon Bay post-race dip, beachfront photos (you gotta do this – sunset selfie is a must!), food, drinks, and more entertainment.

Hya Tara Leonardo and Her Disney Princess I Dare to Dream Adventure
Hya Tara Leonardo, who is fondly known as Hya, is the eldest of six contestants of Lea Salonga’s Disney Princess: I Dare to Dream concert happening on Wednesday, March 22, 2017, to be held at the SM Mall of Asia Arena. The other five contestants Sirach Catipay, Stephanie Jordan, Jaden Narvios, Liana San Diego, and Alexi Tan.
Hya, who is 16 years of age, is the breadwinner of her family; she stopped schooling to financially support her grandmonther and special-needs brother. To do that, Hya sings and dances at clubs, private parties, weddings and such to make ends meet. Her mother abandoned them while her father passed away.
She was even the day’s winner in the Tawag Ng Tanghalan Kids competition last year In February 24, 2016.
Hya wants to be a Broadway actress and singer, just like her idol Lea Salonga. She says, “I want to be rich like people who have iPhones.” Hya has always dreamt of performing in front of a large audience. On March 22nd, one of her dreams will come true.
